In a South Wairarapa valley in the North Island of New Zealand, you’ll find the town of Martinborough - a picturesque village surrounded by premium boutique wineries including the renowned Murdoch James Estate.
Hills lining the valley give shelter from the wind and rain as well as providing a stunning backdrop to the town. Cold winters, with snow on the ranges, and hot dry summers followed by long dry autumns provide ideal conditions for the cool climate grape varieties grown here.

Blue Rock Vineyard
Situated on the Dry River terraces, the Murdoch James Estate’s Blue Rock Vineyard enjoys premium grape growing soil conditions with a mixture of calciferous lime, clay and river silts with a high mineral content. The action of the Australian tectonic plate, scraping the bed of the Pacific plate millions of years ago, gave rise to the limestone rich hills of Blue Rock.
This unique site combined with Martinborough’s warm days and cool nights, forms the character or ‘place’ that is reflected in all of Murdoch James Estate wines.
Murdoch James Estate - Producing wines of distinction
Murdoch James Estate is one of Martinborough’s pioneering wine producers. It was established over 20 years ago when, Roger and Jill Fraser, first planted Pinot Noir and Syrah on the river-stone terraces of the region with the focus on producing wines of distinction.
True to their terroir, the wines of Murdoch James Martinborough are rich in flavour and elegant in structure.

When the winery was upgraded, a large restaurant and tasting area was added and caves were excavated underground to create large cellars. The grounds are landscaped with native flora making it a popular wedding venue.
With the Dry River winding around the property of mature shade trees and a lake, it is the perfect place to spend some time relaxing. Join us on the Grape to Glass Wine Tour, sample the range of premium Murdoch James Estate wines in the tasting room, or enjoy a delicious lunch on the deck of Bloom Restaurant.
