Grape to Glass Wine Tour
If you’re looking for a hosted wine tour in Martinborough that not only lets you taste fine wine but also informs and entertains you with great stories about winemaking, you will love the Grape to Glass Martinborough vineyard tour.
Our popular Grape to Glass Wine Tour is an in-depth look at how fine wine is produced. You will have the opportunity to discuss and explore as we follow the story of wine from the vineyard to the winery, to barrel caves, and finally to bottle – tasting as you go.
Whether you are a novice, new to wine, or more experienced, we’ll cater for your interests and adapt each tour to suit the group’s requirements. You’ll find the tour relaxed, friendly and informative – and all of those tricky winemaking mysteries will be revealed as you meet the workers, and possibly the owners and winemaker.
Start at the very beginning…
Starting in the vineyard, we look at the unique soil profile and macro climate of the Blue Rock Vineyard. It depends on the season as to what you will experience but it can include examining how the vines are pruned and the canopy is managed to produce optimum fruit quality and even tasting the grapes (March/April), before they are handpicked and transported to the winery.
In the winery
In the winery we look at the differences in white wine and red wine production. In April, tip a bin of grapes into our antique press and perhaps even try the juice as it is slowly and gently squeezed from the berries.
You may even get to plunge some red grape skins into their ferment - hopefully with the aid of a hand-held plunger, but if it's a big year, you'll have to get in with your feet!
Going underground into the barrel caves
From the winery we travel down to our underground barrel caves where all of our red wines are aged in different French oak barrels - providing a colour palate of about 200 different flavours from which to blend each of our three Pinot Noirs. Taste our red wines in the caves and discover the differences of new and old French oak, and their influence in wine flavour, texture and development.
Concluding the tour in the tasting room
Your tour concludes in the tasting room where you can continue to enjoy tasting a range of Murdoch James Estate wines and make any wine purchases at our great Cellar Door prices.
